The following are my notes posted on the libretto of "The prompter," a new show currently in Filodrammatici scene of the theater, written and directed by Bruno Fornasari. Dissonanze
What happens in the life of a man who is more satisfied with their work? Most times, nothing. It should be great courage to read in the routine of their lives, the critical elements that need a change. And it takes great courage to act with determination, that change the way down. Or just need an unresolved and painful suspension.
The mechanism is simple and broke it well explained Leon Festinger, American psychologist who died a few months before the fall of the Berlin Wall, with his theory of cognitive dissonance.
Our minds search balance and consistency. But when it detects something not consistent corrects him, inventing an explanation that makes me feel calm. It goes further research to confirm any element of the explanation is given. So, if you know that smoking is bad and I can not stop, I think that after all I know doctors who smoke, and known all those who, while smoking, enjoy excellent health. Thus reducing dissonance. So I put the suspension in my mind.
But then, what is reality, if not the result of a mental? This seems to me true, is nothing but the result of my perception is not limited to "taking note" of objectivity, but it builds its own. The most of the time, unbeknownst to me. That's why "reality does not exist." It is I who, unwittingly, I create my own reality. What makes me more comfortable.
Tom, the spin doctors of our show, is well aware, is a professional assisting to build the reality that makes him more comfortable, convenient illusion that face us. His weapons? Basically three. The first is to conceal the reality, showing us the truth. The second is the changing reality, claiming falsely. But two weapons are incomplete, because they can be exposed. It 's the third one as deadly as paradoxical: show us the truth.
simple: whether to show my true reduces a dissonance in any direction from the spin doctor, that's it.
Unfortunately, the best way to handle it is with the help of ourselves. What do you already own, as if not satisfied with our work, we find the arguments to tell us to be safe.
But then, how to get out?
Perhaps therein lies the importance of theater: to show the responsibility to ask questions, seek answers to us.
